Jean-Pierre van der Walt is targetting his maiden Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup podium this weekend as the fourth round of the championship is hosted at Mpumalamga’s Red Star Raceway on July 1-2.
The Platinum Wheels Volkswagen Polo SupaCup driver occupies seventh place on the points table heading into the mid-season round. Thus far, he has had a host of competitive races at the sharp end of the field but will be looking to break into the top three on track.
“It has been a tough but enjoyable learning curve so far,” says the 2022 series debutant. “This is a very closely-contested series and we are mixing it up with some of the best drivers in South Africa, but I would like to push a little harder for that maiden podium now.”
Van der Walt continues regarding some of the lessons learnt in the opening three rounds of the season. “Well, we saw in Gqeberha how important it is to look after your tyres. But despite that mishap in the qualifying session, I was not as severely compromised as I thought I would be. We are making slight improvements every weekend, which keeps us in the hunt. If we can have a perfect weekend, we know that we have the potential to get closer to that top order.”
Saturday will see Van der Walt competing in two races, both of which will be contested over 12 laps and will start at 12:45 and 15:25, respectfully. Race day will be streamed live via the PW Racing Facebook page. Spectators can contact Red Star Raceway directly regarding ticket information.
