Liebenberg to chase victory in East London

Bradley Liebenberg is determined to continue his victorious momentum in his Hype Energy / Sparco / Universal Motorsport Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI ahead of Round 5 of this year’s Global Touring Cars (GTC) Championship at the East London Grand Prix Circuit this coming weekend (August 5-6).

A grand slam in the previous round, held at Red Star Raceway, saw the 2022 class debutant rocket up the points table to third place. However, the reigning GTC SupaCup champion knows it will be a significant challenge to contend for the top spot with only three rounds remaining. Now established as the leader of the midpack, he trails fellow GTC SupaCup graduate Saood Variawa by 40 points, with defending GTC Champion Robert Wolk another six points clear.

“Both Robert and Saood have been consistent at the front this year, so it will take nothing short of a few miracles for me to join that battle at this stage,” says Liebenberg. “But that won’t stop us from continuing the fine form that we have shown at Red Star. We are hungry for more victories and after the tragic events from two months ago, we are also carrying the hopes of Volkswagen Motorsport on our shoulders.”

Liebenberg, now the driver with the most combined GTC starts, holds an excellent record at the Eastern Cape road course from his previous four GTC2 and GTC SupaCup outings. This was, in fact, the venue where he had a similar performance to his Red Star Raceway outing back in 2017, coming off the back of a difficult start to the season to take his maiden victories back then.

“I love the circuit. It is fast, and if you have the power under the hood, this is the best place to unleash it. The team worked hard to get us in this position, so we hope for another superb weekend.”

Saturday’s two GTC races start at 12:40 and 15:45 and run over 10 and 12 laps, respectively. Spectator tickets will be available at the entrance on Saturday and are priced at R80.00 per adult, with children under 12 allowed free entry. The entire Extreme Festival will be streamed live on the Global Touring Cars Facebook page and 2WheelsTV YouTube channel.
