Killarney International Raceway proved to be a challenging outing for Jean-Pierre van der Walt with a solitary point from the penultimate round of the Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup this past weekend (16-17 September).
In Saturday morning’s closely contested qualifying session, the Platinum Wheels Polo SupaCup driver had to settle for 11th on the grid. The opening race was neutralised early due to the safety car’s deployment. From the restart, Van der Walt tailed the battle for sixth place but had to settle for 10th and one point.
Race 2 also saw an early accident, along with the swift end to the tussle between Paul Luti and Van der Walt. This time, the race was stopped completely, and from the restart, Van der Walt looked confident. However, after three laps, he had to retire following an incident. He was, however, classified in 13th place due to completing the minimum amount of laps; little consolation on a weekend where he was eager to deliver a strong performance.
“This was our most challenging meeting since joining this year, and we will bounce back,” said Van der Walt. “Even before the incident, we didn’t quite find ourselves where we expected to be. There will definitely be a lot of work before our season finale at Zwartkops. I want to thank everyone who made this weekend possible.”
The GTC SupaCup season finale will take place at Zwartkops Raceway on 14-15 October.
