The 2023 Global Touring Cars (GTC) season will see the national category visit five venues in three South African provinces as part of the seven-round championship calendar.
This will mark the eighth season of for the open-manufacturer championship. The category will again be bolstered by the GTC SupaCup, which currently contains but is not limited to, identical Volkswagen Motorsport-produced Polo SupaCup cars. As a combined series, this field has consistently produced the largest four-wheel grids in the 2022 national motorsport season.
Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit will make a welcome return to the series’ calendar. The FIA Grade 2 circuit outside Johannesburg last featured on the 2018 GTC Calendar when it hosted both the season-opening round and a mid-season round as part of the Festival of Motoring. 2023 will mark the second occasion of the circuit hosting the season opener, which will form part of the Kyalami 9 Hour event.
The GTC Championship & SupaCup were on the support roster for the 2021 edition of the event, but a late date change, brought on by COVID-19-related travel restrictions imposed on South Africa, resulted in the series having to withdraw from the rescheduled 2022 event due to logistical reasons.
The rest of the championship will form part of the Extreme Festival tour. Like 2022, Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town and Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria will each host two rounds. Aldo Scribante Racetrack in Gqeberha and East London Grand Prix Circuit on the southern outskirts of East London will each feature once on the calendar.
With four coastal and three inland events, the 2023 season will commence on the final weekend of February and will again conclude at Zwartkops Raceway in the middle of October. Except for the season opener, for which the programme will be announced at a later stage by the promoter, all events will follow the familiar two-day format, with qualifying and two races taking place on Saturday.
The Investchem Formula 1600 and CompCare Polo Cup championships will share the same tour programme as GTC. Al the Extreme Festival rounds will also feature the Gazoor Racing GR Cup and G&H Transport Extreme Supercars. The SunBet ZX10 Masters and Mobil 1 V8 Supercars categories will feature at four and three events, respectively.
